This article will explain the differences between THC and CBD as well as what they are used for.

WHAT IS CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a type of cannabinoid which are the naturally occurring chemicals found in cannabis plants. CBD’s relation to the cannabis plant is generally a cause of concern with the general population. However, CBD does NOT get you high. CBD has been proven to have many wellness benefits and its primary uses have included optimising the body’s functions, overall wellness, and many other health maintenance effects.

WHAT IS THC?

Delta (9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – is another type of cannabinoid and it is the chemical that causes the “high” that’s associated with recreational and medical marijuana.

Due to THC’s psychoactive qualities, it is commonly known to provide a euphoric high or a negative high, depending upon the strain of THC and the user.

CBD VS. THC: CHEMICAL AND MOLECULAR STRUCTURE

CBD and THC have the exact same chemical structure: 21 carbon atoms, 30 hydrogen atoms, and 2 oxygen atoms. However, these molecules are arranged differently – the reason for their contrasting effects on your body & mind. Both of these compounds are chemically similar to your body’s own endocannabinoids. This allows THC and CBD to react with your cannabinoid receptors; your body’s endocannabinoid receptors don’t know the difference. In the endocannabinoid system, CB1 and CB2 are the most important cannabinoid receptors.CB1 receptors are found mostly in the brain. CB2 receptors, are usually found in the immune system. When your body absorbs these cannabinoids, they impact your central nervous system by releasing neurotransmitters in your brain. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that relay messages between your cells. CBD and THC bind to different receptors and that’s why they have very different effects on the human body.
